In a partnership that lasted from 1907 to 1922, more than 300 building designs by William Gray Purcell and George Grant Elmslie were constructed.  P&E’s work has been widely published; however, little attention has been paid to the fundamentally spiritualistic nature of their work.  In this lecture, I will define and discuss “spiritualism,” the notion that there are mystical aspects to the universe beyond what is apparent to our senses.  Then I'll establish that P&E were spiritualists -- and show how they expressed their spiritualistic beliefs in writing and architecture.
