Off the Grid: Prospect Park

  • 66 Malcolm Avenue Southeast Minneapolis, MN, 55414 United States (map)

Prospect Park, with its close proximity to the Univeristy of Minnesota, benefited from that relationship by developing into an academic enclave with many homes designed by instructor-architects from the U's School of Architecture. These architects designed many prominent buildings in Minneapolis and elsewhere; however, they balanced their commercial work with their residential work in this neighborhood, reflecting many experimental examples and variations on prevailing styles. The neighborhood includes such varied architectural styles as Victorian, Foursquare, Prairie Derivative, Colonial Revival, and Early Modern, representing the span of the city’s architectural history.

Over the years Prospect Park’s homeowners have respected the quality of their homes, and the neighborhood today remains one of Minneapolis' most livable environments. Prospect Park community leaders are currently in the process of establishing conservation district zoning to guide this neighborhood into the future.

This tour will walk about half a mile, on winding narrow streets through hilly and wooded terrain. The tour guide is Bob Roscoe
